Let's Go Yankees!

So it's been a while but no matter what I'll always come back to this blog. It's a comfort-zone thing.

I'm living in Philadelphia and working at an AT&T store, which I'm enjoying despite not writing for a newspaper or anything in the field of journalism. I'm making money, happy, and living in a city I love.

There is this one thing though... I'm a Yankees fan living in Philadelphia. As I predicted on Memorial Day weekend, May 24, the Phillies and Yankees are in the World Series. The 2009 MLB season has been a crash course for this all year. There is no doubt in my mind that the two best teams in baseball are playing in the Fall Classic. That said, I think this particular Fall Classic has all the trimmings to become an instant classic.

I'll write about the stats and figures later, probably tomorrow. Right now I wanna talk about my dilemma. I honestly think I need to wear a teflon vest to the bars to watch the games. Nevermind that I won't be wearing my jersey or hat, I, the most compulsive and animated person I know, has to resort to small fist pumps under the table. Sure, all my Phillies friends jab me and that's all in good fun, but at a bar with hundreds of drunk Phillies fans, well I just need to think of my own safety.

After the Phils won the pennant, there were hundreds of people flooding the streets of Philly, already screaming "Fuck the Yankees!" and all sorts of other hoopla and banter. It was an interesting look into the eyes of a city that loves its teams more than anything.

Philadelphia is in my opinion the best sports town in America, rivaled only by Boston and New York. The reason why I even hesistate to put the Big Apple on there is because of all the division. Hockey: Rangers, Islanders or Devils. Football: Giants or Jets. Baseball: Yankees or Mets. Basketball: Knicks or Nets. Philadelphians and Bostonians don't have a choice, and they're awfully happy about that. No city gets behind its teams like Philadelphia. Boston is close but I'm a Yankees fan so I hate Boston... just kidding. Not about hating Boston though, about Boston as a sports town. It's a very legitimate sports town indeed, but Philadelphia is more blue collar. It has more attitude. It talks more shit, and man does it hate New York.

But anyways I'm a Yankees fan, and believe me this World Series is gonna be hard. I'm worried about it. I'm losing sleep over it. I love Philadelphia, a hell of a lot. I love this city for the very reason why it chastises me for liking the Yankees. As hard as it's going to be to hide my true colors, it's going to be equally as hard to not let this potentially seven-game series damage my love for my favorite city.

It's going to be a daunting task for sure, but I feel like I'm used to doing things like this. I ran track and cross country in high school and college. Do you think I picked up girls at the mall? So let's raise up Billy Crystal, Mayor Giuliani, Jay-Z and Kate Hudson. Let's get that 27th.

Uncle Derek, Robbie, Johnny, let's win one more for Mo, Andy, and Jorge. Let's christen this new stadium with some champagne. Even if only the aforementioned celebs can afford it.
