So I'm working at an AT&T authorized retailer in Philadelphia. Keep in mind I'm a Yankees fan. It's tough dealing with customers. I just bite my tongue. Don't wanna upset anyone. You can't turn 90 degrees in this city without seeing a Phillies hat, shirt, flag hanging from an apartment. I saw a businessman the other day with a jersey over his shirt and tie.
This city has the postseason fever, and while I want the Yankees to win their 27th World Series, it is awfully amazing to see how devoted and dedicated this city is about its sports, especially the Phillies. My friend thinks it's still more of a football town, but I disagree. Ryan Howard or Donovan McNabb? Seriously, most Philly fans have probably forgotten about Michael Vick altogether.
Gene Wojciechowski wrote in an article last week on ESPN.com about how this city bearhugs this Phils team, and it's true. We had a customer earlier today and after we fixed her phone I asked if she had anything else we could help her with. She said, "Oh yeah. Go Phils!"
She then told me about how she's not that big of a sports fan but she loves this team and its players. The way they conduct themselves and how they play together. The Phillies are a good group of guys, but hey, I've never sat down to dinner with them.
What I do know is that if this series keeps going like it did Wednesday night in the Bronx, the Yankees are in trouble.
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it all. Cliff Lee pitched a complete-game gem last night, making plays and hitting his spots. He rang up 10 Yankees and didn't allow a single walk in his 6-1 defeat of what I thought was the most powerful lineup in baseball. Shows what I know, or what I thought I knew.
What I do know is that the Phillies don't have more than one Cliff Lee. Additionally the Yankees only have one C.C. Sabathia and no matter whose on the mound, Chase Utley will make at least three plate appearances. Sheesh! The Phils needed to take one on the road and they got it last night. Hopefully that's their one to take in New York. Pedro Martinez is on the mound tonight for Philadelphia.
Hey Pedro... Who's your daddy?
