Yesterday was an off day for the World Series and let me tell you, it was much-needed. For both teams as well as the New York and Philadelphia fans and cities. I really just needed a night off. I can imagine bartenders needed the break as well. It's been mentally taxing for all parties involved. That said, I'm still not ready for baseball season to end. I still want a re-write the books Game 7 after a dramatic Game 6. I really just want one more day of summer.
Tonight is lookin like Pettitte vs. Martinez. "Who's your daddy?" goes out the door at this point. The Yankee faithful has serenaded Pedro already, and he took it well. I gotta say I like Pedro a lot more than when he was with Boston. He really is a good sportsman.
"I would just have to thank God, not only for the opportunity but for keeping me healthy and blessing me and Andy," Martinez said in Jim Caple's article on ESPN.com "I have such a long career and it's gone full circle, to be able to compete in a World Series, on one of the biggest stages and to just see two old goats out there doing the best they can and having fun with it." There's no uncertainty that these two teams aren't having fun, probably more fun than they've had in the heat of competition. I know I'm having a blast.
Tonight is about one thing though and that's winning. Philadelphia doesn't wanna go home and New York doesn't wanna play another game. Statistically a team that has forced a seventh game after being down 3-1 has a much better chance in the seventh game than the team that was up 3-1. I don't think these Phils have run out of fight, but we'll have to wait and see.
SEPTA is still on strike here in Philly, but it was another sunny morning in the City of Brotherly Love. There's no telling this town "no."
Rollins said he just wasn't ready to go home and watch football and college basketball. I couldn't agree more, but obviously with a little different mindset.
Le Moyne, a neighboring Division 2 school, defeated No. 25 Syracuse Tuesday night. Unreal. Evidently the Orange wasn't ready for college basketball either. Appalachian State, anyone?
If that's not any indication of the upset bug spreading around sports, it's an indication of the parity that is spreading all over the nation in collegiate sports. I realize I'm getting a bit off topic with this basketball banter, but it's certainly newsworthy.
That's the most attention I've paid to football or basketball since this World Series got underway. I was relieved when I found out the Steelers had their bye during Game 4. I wouldn't have been able to handle it.
Cole Hamels is tired and mentally drained. Pitch him in Game 7? Pitch Lee on short rest? I'm getting ahead of myself with this. I do know that in World Series history, a century plus five years worth of it, a team winning it all after being down 3-1 has only happened six times. That's a little more than a five percent chance. Ouch! But hey, the Red Sox were the first team to battle back and win after being in a 3-0 hole, and that was to the Yankees, some of which are still wearing the famed pinstripes, just five short years ago. So in honor of the great Yogi Berra, it ain't over...
