You could hear a pin drop in Philadelphia. Broad Street, South Street, they were all empty. There was no line at Pat's or Geno's.
Walking to my car after the Yankees 27th World Series victory, it was eerie to listen to the deafening silence. The City of Brotherly Love was like a ghost town. I just put my fist up and smiled as one of the happiest guys in a city of more than a million. The Yankees did it. I couldn't have been happier. I used to think I liked the Steelers more than the Yankees, but once the MLB postseason rolled around I quickly learned that it's a seasonal thing. What's more is that all three of my professional sports teams won titles in this calendar year: Steelers, Penguins and Yankees. Maybe I sold my soul at birth without realizing it.
Hideki Matsui was superb in the series as he earned his MVP trophy. Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera got their fifth World Series ring. Mo got the save, Pettitte got the Game 6 win and in the new Yankee Stadium's first season, the Yankees christened it with a title.
Buying championships, big payroll, yadda yadda. The talk doesn't matter. The Yankees won! Theeeeeee Yankees won!
The Phillies have nothing to be ashamed of though. They were the first National League team since the 1995-96 Braves to get to the World Series in consecutive seasons. Let's face it, they met a much better team than the 2008 Rays and I wouldn't be surprised to see them back in it in 2010.
While there are many places to point fingers, I personally think that Ryan Howard's 3-for-23 performance with 13 strikeouts is most at fault. But he's only one guy. Teixeira shit the bed too for New York, but his team backed him up better. Some people blame Manuel but I think he did everything he could have.
To be honest I'm gonna miss this postseason, especially the Fall Classic. Yeah my team won, but it's more than just that. Living in Philadelphia and seeing how intense this city gets about its teams, it's been amazing. Even being the only Yankee fan in my group of friends, I had a blast watching the games and exchanging trash talk.
But summer is over now. The leaves are falling and it's getting cold. SEPTA is still on strike. Good thing the Eagles exist.
Now the Philadelphia media contingency can shove 20 more microphones back in Donovan McNabb's face and get back to their Eagles. After the stillness that stirred after the Phillies were finally eliminated, it was hard to believe this city would cheer again, but the Eagles host Dallas Sunday evening and the NFC East lead is at stake. Just like the sand in an hour glass, so go the seasons of our teams...
