So as usual it's been a while. Far too long even. A co-worker of mine at The Gettysburg Times just started a blog and e-mailed me the link, so I figured I'd jump back on my internet journalism horse.
Since my last post, the Penguins lost the last NHL game ever played at Mellon Arena. A Shame. The Flyers are looking real good, having just taken a demanding three games to one lead in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Canadiens, the Habs... I really grew tired of "friends" on facebook posting things like: "Let's go Habs!!!" C'mon now people. You are not Canadiens fans, stop pretending to be just to hate on the Penguins. And Habs? Seriously. I'll admit I had no clue what Habs meant prior to this postseason, and you didn't either.
I think it's proper sports fan etiquette that one shouldn't cheer for a team that one would ordinarily be indifferent to just because one wants that team's opponent to lose. Is there such a thing as sports fan etiquette? There should be. Maybe there should be. I really don't know if there should be. Maybe there definitely should not be. Who knows?
Anyways, if the Flyers win the Cup the city of Philadelphia will probably be burnt down. A lot of people think it wouldn't come anywhere close to when the Phillies won the World Series in 2008, but I think it will. Philadelphia loves the Flyers. More than the Sixers.
Me and a buddy of mine went to the Philadelphia book signing for Bill Simmons' "Book of Basketball" during the 2009 World Series and when The Sports Guy rattled off the hometown teams to the crowd, the Sixers were practically booed. That's Philly fans for ya.
It seems that everything I said in my last post didn't really pan out, proving a lot more than once and for all that I really don't know anything at all about sports. Maybe that's why I'm not a sports writer. But I was something like 60 percent correct in my college football column in the Hofstra Chronicle the fall of my senior year of college.
[Autumn of 2008, easily the best autumn of my life. Autumn of '09 was solid, so was autumn of '02, but they don't hold a flame to '08. I don't think it's possible to come close to '08's autumn. Summer '09 was great, but I can already tell that summer '10 is gonna be as good if not better.]
The Penguins lost, LeBron took a crap in his pants, further devastating an already devastated sports town, the Yankees dropped three straight divisional games... but wait, I did mention the Flyers looking good, and for the first time since the 2004 ALCS, a team came back from a 0-3 deficit.
I sure do love when Boston loses. That reminds me, I can't recall whether or not I've stated my teams in prior blogs, and while I very likely may have, I'm going to state them here: Steelers, Yankees, Penguins. Not in any particular order. I hate the Ravens, Patriots, Red Sox, Flyers, and I think that's it.
I'll get somewhere with this. I guess there isn't sports fan etiquette and shouldn't be. I just try to be a respectful fan, which may or may not be a rarity, but I love when the Red Sox lose. If they're playing the Reds, I love to watch the Sox lose. I guess that would make me the person that cheered for the Habs just to hate on the Penguins. Funny how that works.
That said though, I wouldn't mind seeing the Flyers win for the City of Brotherly Love. I'm all about cities and their relationships with their teams. I love love and that's why I changed the title of this blog to "Sports Romance," an appropriate name. Sports are important, a vital part of everyday life. They give us fun, pride, camaraderie, fellowship but most importantly hope.

Glad to provide some inspiration for you. I actually did see your blog before you told me about it, but I was a dork and didn't leave any comments. I'm hoping I don't get sick of posting. You've been doing it for two years, which is pretty impressive. Congratulations again on your girlfriend winning that Bermuda cruise (curses, you lucky bastard!) Whenever you two decide to go, I know you'll have a blast. See you around the office!
